The approach of summer brings an all-too-familiar challenge to libraries: How do we keep kids and their families engaged in learning and reading during the summer months?
This past fall, fresh off our second pandemic summer, we rolled up our sleeves and analyzed summer reading participation and engagement for the return of our annual Summer Reading Report. With data from more than 1.4 million readers, representing over 10,000 library buildings from 1,759 systems, plus historic learnings dating back to their first report in 2016, the team produced a 30-page report spanning the summers of 2019, 2020, and 2021 to give a full picture of the state of summer reading in our new normal.
The insights and recommendations in the 2021 Summer Reading Report are beneficial to all libraries and schools, regardless of whether they use Beanstack.
This past February, we sponsored a webinar with American Libraries Live, featuring co-founder and CEO Felix Lloyd, our two resident MLIS librarians, and the product manager for a behind-the-scenes look at the methodology and examples used to develop the 2021 Summer Reading Report.
The key learnings in the webinar will include:
- Why Beanstack is committed to crunching the numbers
- How libraries are adapting to get engagement numbers back on track
- What reading challenge design decisions increase enrollment
- What gamification principles and features are proven to boost engagement
